Mexico rescues a Cuban family lost on the migratory route

MEXICO CITY.- Nine members of a Cuban family, including four women and a minor, were rescued on the mountainous and inhospitable migratory route of Ejido Jacume, in Tecate, Mexico, after managing to contact the lifeguards, according to versions of the local press.

The victims were able to make a call to the XXIV City Hall of Tijuana, at 8:54 in the morning of this Wednesday, December 13. The Municipal Director of Migrant Assistance, Enrique Lucero Vázquez, pointed out that since last October, 31 people who take the route have been rescued.

From January to October 2023, Mexican authorities registered almost 590,000 migrants in an irregular situation, a significant increase compared to previous years.

Due to the high irregular migratory flow, the director of the National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM)Francisco Garduño, issued an order to suspend the transfers and returns of migrants in an irregular situation due to the lack of funds from that federal entity.

At the beginning of this month, hundreds of migrants, including Cubans, protested in the city of Huixtla, Mexicoto demand documents from local authorities and continue their journey to the United States.

About 5,000 migrants walked from Mexico’s southern border on Monday in a new caravan, considered the one with the largest influx of citizens for more than a year, bound for the United States, they have been walking from Central America.

The formation of groups that start walking from this city in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala has been constant given the slowness of the migratory processes and the lack of resources and work so that foreigners can afford the wait in the south of the country. .

However, there has not been one this big since June 2022, which came out to coincide with the Summit of the Americas that was then held in the United States and focused on the issue of migration. At that time, the Mexican government chose to dissolve it by giving migrants documents to allow their transit through Mexico.

The new one caravan, made up mainly of Central Americans, Venezuelans, Haitians and Cubans, takes place shortly after the meeting held on October 21, also in Chiapas, between a dozen countries in the region, among which were the main expellers of migrants and in the midst of a growing flow of migrants to the United States.
