Mexico ranked second in 2022 among the three countries with the highest number of murders of human rights defendersa concept of activism that includes defenders of the territory and the environment, according to the records of the non-governmental organization Front Line Defenders.
Colombia is in the first position of the list, almost quadrupling the figures of its closest competitors, with a median of 3.5 murders per week.
Ukraine, at war since February 2022 against Russia, which has invaded its territory, recorded the murder of 50 human rights defenders, a median of 0.96 murders per week.
In Mexico, 45 murders were registered, according to the Front Line Defenders register, with a median of 0.86 murders per week, well above the registers of Burma, India and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
