A Miami man was arrested on charges of scam after impersonate the son of a 94-year-old woman, in order to take over her house and a large sum of money from his social security, reported the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

After four months of investigations, Alejandro F. Díaz Torriente64, was arrested the previous week accused of fraud, exploitation of an elderly/disabled person y grand theft.

“He conspired to scammed her out of almost 20,000 dollars in cash and his house worth more than $600,000“explained Florida State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle.

With cunning and premeditation, the prosecutor stressed, Díaz concocted a plan to infiltrate the life of the woman, who lived alone in the home she bought in 1980.

In 2021, the elderly woman had been declared legally incompetent and, a year later, a daughter of her neighbor was appointed her legal guardian by the court.

Ignoring this, the now accused gained the trust of the woman, whom he met in 2020, and subsequently moved into her home and changed the locks, according to investigations.

At the beginning of this year, Díaz presented a fraudulent title, in which he was added as a co-owner with right of survivorship in the elderly woman’s house.

He referred to himself as the victim’s son, calling her ‘mom’ to caregivers and medical staff.“, revealed the prosecutor, which made it possible for the alleged fraudster to prevent the woman’s access to her legal guardian.

The researchers discovered that Díaz would have appropriated nearly $20,000 in social security benefits for the elderly. Her legal guardian became suspicious of the man when she realized the money was being redirected to an unknown bank account.

Fernández Rundle warned at the press conference: “Criminals who prey on the elderly and vulnerable are on notice. “We will do everything possible to arrest them and seek justice for their victims.”

Díaz remains behind bars.
