Microsoft's hidden plans: The technology giant wanted to buy Square Enix in 2019

A 2019 document (already deleted) has been found that shows Microsoft’s interest in acquiring Square Enix, highlighting its attraction to franchises such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Tomb Raider. In addition, interest in secondary works is mentioned, such as Kingdom Hearts, which is still part of his catalogue.

The inclusion of these titles in Xbox Game Pass it was a highlight for the tech giant, looking to attract more subscribers with the purchase. Also Square Enix’s appeal across consoles, PC, and mobile devices was evaluated. However, it was warned that the manga publication, mostly geared towards the Japanese domestic market, would not bring value to Microsoft.

The document outlines the plans that went through Phil Spencer before reaching the company’s board of directors. However, It is not disclosed how progress was made on this matter or what developments occurred. Since Square Enix sold part of its IPs to the Embracer Group in 2022, including the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex franchise, the acquisition may have lost its appeal today.

Since the Japanese market is crucial in the video game industry, Microsoft has been evaluating various acquisition possibilities, including Square Enix and SEGA., owner of franchises such as Sonic, Yakuza and Atlus. Plans and direct meetings with shareholders and directors have been considered.

This information was revealed during the legal process that will determine the approval or not of the Activision acquisition. Both the Federal Trade Commission in the United States (FTC) and the Competition and Markets Authority in the United Kingdom (CMA) continue to deny approval.
