AND next Tuesday, May 9th, Mimicat takes the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest, which this year takes place in Liverpool, in the United Kingdom. Here’s what to expect from the Portuguese performance and the chances of reaching the final of the biggest music competition in Europe.

Mimicat plays in 5th place in the semifinal and, in addition to Portugal, Norway, Malta, Serbia, Latvia, Ireland, Croatia, Switzerland, Israel, Moldova, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Finland.

The singer made her debut on the Eurovision stage last Sunday, April 30th, for her first rehearsal and worked out the details of her performance in a second rehearsal on Wednesday.

To the News by the MinuteMimicat already had promised to bring a “modern cabaret” to Liverpoolbut, according to the previews of the rehearsals, the famous sofa used in the Song Festival is left behind.

On social media, she herself explained that the decision to leave the sofa out had to do with the (large) size of the Eurovision stage and that the play would lose impact. Therefore, Mimicat will only be accompanied by four dancers: two couples.

Here are the previews of the rehearsals for the first semifinal in order of performance:

Trials over, what do the bookmakers say?

After the release of the ‘previews’ of the tests, it is common for the countries’ positions in the bookmakers to change, whether for better or worse. It happened, for example, in 2021, when The Black Mamba represented Portugal with ‘Love Is On My Side’ and jumped from 27th place (in a total of 39 countries) to 17th, after rehearsals. In the final of the festival, they managed to reach the 12th position.

In the case of Mimicat, little has changed. According to the website Eurovision World, which brings together the main bookmakers, ‘Ai Coração’ has fluctuated between 26th and 27th position since all 37 songs in the contest were released and has remained there. I.e, if the bets were votes, Portuguese music would be in limbo with regard to a passage to the final of the festivalas there is only room for 26 countries.

However, if only the bets referring to the first semifinal are analyzed, Mimicat managed to qualify for the final in 10th position (a total of 10 countries).

The first semifinal will be particularly challenging for Mimicat, since it concentrates most of the songs favored to victory. By way of example, the Sweden, Finland, Norway and Israel are part of the ‘Top 10’ created by bookmakers and operate on the same day as Portugal.

In the second semifinal, there is only one song that appears in the ‘Top 10’ – ‘Who the Hell Is Poe?’, by the Austrians Teya and Salena. The remaining ‘Top’ is made up of France, Ukraine, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom, five of the six countries going directly to the final.

It should be noted that the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Liverpool between the 9th and 13th of May, after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC announced that the United Kingdom would be the country to host the festival, despite Ukraine having won the previous edition. At stake were uncertainties about whether the country would be able to host the event because of the Russian invasion taking place in the territory.
