MLB: Noah Song leaves Navy to join Major League Baseball

For almost four years, Noah Song had to pause his desire to become professional pitcher to serve in the United States Navywhere he became one of its aviation pilots.

Song will pick up a baseball again after he was transferred to the select reserves. The American will report to the Phillies today in an attempt to get one of the pitching spots.

“I’m pretty excited because I was able to achieve everything I wanted to. I always said that I wanted to serve and I also wanted to pursue my dream of reaching the Major Leagues in MLB,” Song said in an interview with the Capital Gazette newspaper. “I think it’s a overall win-win.”

According to information published by Excelsior, the 25-year-old young pitcher was chosen by Philadelphia in the December Rule 5 draft, coming from the Boston Red Sox.

He last pitched in 2019, when he posted a 1.06 ERA in 17 Low-A innings after the Red Sox drafted him in the fourth round out of the Naval Academy and signed him for $100,000.

In 2019, the Defense Department denied Song a waiver to waive his military obligation and he has been on active duty ever since. His transfer to select reserves allows him to resume his baseball career.

Song will enter spring training knowing he has a long way to go to regain the form that made him one of the top prospects coming out of the Naval Academy.

“I think managing expectations will be very important; I’ve really taken three years off from competitive pitching. I don’t know what my new ceiling will be, but it will be fun to start working hard and find out,” he concluded.
