The film “Momo” is a film adaptation of the children’s book of the same name (1973) by Michael Ende. It tells the story of a little girl named Momo who lives in a disused cement factory and becomes friends with the residents of a nearby town. One day, a group of beings called “The Gray Lords” appear who try to steal people’s time by giving them illusions of wealth and fame. Momo decides to fight the Gray Lords and helps the humans reclaim their time. The film deals with themes of friendship, courage and the importance of time.

Radost Bokel starred in the film adaptation in 1986, and for many people the film is now considered a “cult”. A cult who allegedly is re-filmed. Ende’s book has long been recognized as a critique of consumerism, stress, and callous individualism—topics that should still resonate in modern times. Momo is reportedly being brought to the big screen by German producer Christian Becker (Die Welle, Fuck You, Goethe) and screenwriter-director Christian Ditter (How To Be Single).

“We’re very happy with the script,” says Ditter. “The novel appeals to several generations. It’s a fantasy story that’s poetic and personal, but also about family and friendship. The book’s central premise, about mysterious creatures that steal time, was an unusual concept in the ’80s, but it becomes even fresher in today’s world of long hours, global corporations, and the quest for wellness and mindfulness.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in late 2023.

Nobody must know who we are and what we do, we must remain anonymous […] We have to laboriously snatch time away from people. Tap off in seconds. Minutes, seconds, hours, lifetime, any time they save is lost to them because we use it up, grab it, suck you dry, suck you dry, grab it, save it , hunger for it, hunger for it, for your life […] And we are becoming more and more […] hundreds, millions. And suck and suck and suck“).
