More than 374,000 affected and 187,000 displaced by floods in northeast China

Recent typhoon-induced rains caused heavy flooding in the northern regions of Chinaaffecting more than 374,000 people and forcing the displacement of more than 187,000 to safe places in the province of Heilongjiang.

The resulting floods in recent days have caused damage to crops and homes, which is why the Chinese government has allocated one billion yuan (139 million dollars, €126 million) to compensate for the losses in the affected areas, reported Wednesday the state news agency Xinhua.

Given the forecast that the typhoon khanun landfall in South Korea this Thursday, the Chinese authorities have activated level IV of emergency response in the provinces of Liaoning and Shandong, the lowest of a four-degree system.

Different agencies have implemented preventive measures including evacuation of vulnerable areas, ship protection and flood control, as in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces, where the level III emergency.

In the affected areas, eight flood storage areas have been used to accumulate around 1,850 million cubic meters of water, which has contributed to alleviating the floods.

The authorities met this Wednesday to discuss the current situation of rains, floods and typhoons, and they maintain a growing concern about water levels and possible secondary disasters.

China braces for the impact of the typhoon khanun and seeks to mitigate the effects of past floods, caused by the Doksuriwhich left a total of 33 deaths in beijingwhile 18 people are still missing.

Doksuri caused in the capital of the Asian giant rains of a volume not seen for a long time 140 years.

In 2021 and 2022, the summers had already been marked by rainfall of an unprecedented intensity in decades in the center of the country, with more than 300 deadand by a persistent drought in areas further south.
