Data from the Ministry of Health show that the hospitalization rate for motorcyclists increased from 3.9 per 10,000 inhabitants to 6.1 per 10,000 inhabitants between 2011 and 2021 – an increase of 55%, considering only the Unified Health System network (SUS) and affiliates. According to the Ministry of Health, in 2021 alone, the cost of this type of hospitalization reached R$ 167 million. 
In 2020, traffic injuries were responsible for more than 190,000 hospitalizations – of these, about 61% among motorcyclists. “Road traffic injuries are a major global public health problem, ranking among the top ten causes of death in low- and middle-income countries and the sixth leading cause of Daly, the acronym in English Disability Adjusted Life Years, which means years of life disability-adjusted losses”.

Also according to the epidemiological bulletin released by the ministry, the number of motorcyclist deaths from traffic injuries remained stable between 2011 (11,485 deaths) and 2021 (11,115 deaths), as well as the mortality rate, which in 2011 was 5 .8 per 100,000 inhabitants and, in 2021, it was 5.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Reflections on the SUS
“Morbidity and mortality from traffic injuries, especially that of motorcyclists, are characterized as a problem with multiple determinations and the interventions for their reduction depend on different actors of the economic and public systems”, evaluated the folder. For the ministry, sector actions should be complemented by actions by transit, education and urban planning bodies.
“It is also of fundamental importance to train the health care network to identify accidents at work with motorcyclists, both commuting and typical, properly notifying the health information systems, allowing to obtain reliable information about this injury and propose health promotion actions and prevention of these accidents.”
