Android 13 has been officially available since autumn 2022, but updates from Google traditionally take a long time for other manufacturers to provide them – one of the shortcomings of the operating system. With the latest version, however, a trend reversal is emerging.

Android has its reputation, but fortunately it doesn’t quite live up to it

Android has lost its reputation: Even if Google regularly presents updates, many devices will never see them. If you look far back to versions like Android KitKat or Lollipop, it’s clear why the operating system has earned this reputation. Even months after the release, not even one percent of the devices had been reached. The reason: in addition to Google’s devices, then under the Nexus brand, the update mostly only came into the hands of users with new models. A look at Android, how it has developed in recent years, clearly shows that a lot has happened here.

More and more manufacturers, including Samsung, Sony and OnePlus, have declared in recent years that they want to provide updates faster and longer. Google was also able to significantly expand its Android device program, now Pixel. These factors ensure that new versions spread much faster. The last official figures provided by Google via the Android Studio developer platform are from August 2022. How 9to5Google reports, new statistics are now available for the first time that show the spread of Android 13: Google can make a real leap in terms of speed with the latest versions.

5.2 percent sounds little, but it is enormous

Around five months after the release, Android 13 is installed on 5.2 percent of all devices. The previous version Android 12 can also increase significantly compared to the figures from last year: the value has now risen from 13.5 percent to 18.9 percent.

Another important indicator: 68 percent of Android devices currently in use are now running at least version 10. If you include Android 9.0, which was released in August 2018, the figure rises to over 80 percent. Of course, the reverse also applies here: almost 20 percent of Android devices run with an operating system that was released more than 5 years ago.
