SZA, Phoebe Bridgers and Barbie win first Grammys

THE ANGELS.- Stevie Wonder, Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Smokey Robinson and J Balvin are some of the more than 200 names that appear in a new open letter presented by the non-profit organization Artist Rights Alliance, which asks technology companies artificial intelligence (AI), developers, platforms and services music digital to stop using AI to infringe and devalue the rights of the artists humans.

Artist Rights Alliance is an artist-led nonprofit organization advocating for musicians in a precarious digital economy.

Juanes, Danna Paola, Luis Fonsi, Banda El Recodo de Don Cruz Lizrraga and Daniela Spalla are other signatories.

The request

The letter, while acknowledging the creative possibilities of new AI technology, addresses some of its threats to human-made art. These include using pre-existing works to train AI models, without authorization, in an attempt to replace artists and therefore: “substantially dilute the royalty funds paid to artists,” the letter reads.

“This assault on human creativity must stop,” the letter reads. “We must guard against the predatory use of AI to steal the voices and likenesses of professional artists, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.”

Last month, Tennessee became the first American locality to pass legislation designed to protect songwriters, performers and other music industry professionals from the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Supporters say the goal is to ensure that generative AI tools cannot replicate an artist’s voice without her consent.

The bill, called the Ensuring the Safety of Likeness, Voice and Image Act, or ELVIS Act, goes into effect on July 1.

“In Tennessee we employ more people in the music industry than in any other state,” Tennessee Governor Bill Lee told reporters shortly after signing the bill. “Artists have intellectual property. They have gifts. They have a uniqueness that is theirs and theirs alone, certainly not artificial intelligence’s.”
