Nadal assures that he only seeks to be competitive on his return in Brisbane

BERLIN.- Rafael Nadal confirmed on Monday that he will compete in the Laver Cup in Berlin in September, which could be the last tournament for the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal hinted that 2024 could be his last year on the Tour and this week confirmed after his loss in the second round of the Barcelona Open, a tournament he has won 12 times, against Alex de Minaur that “it would probably be his last there.” .

“At this point in my career, I want to enjoy all the opportunities that come my way”said the Spanish tennis player in a statement.

The 37-year-old Spanish superstar has had injury problems for several years and has played just five competitive matches this year, three in Brisbane in January and two last week in Barcelona.

The Laver Cup, which takes place between September 20 and 22 on the indoor hard court, pits a European Team against a World Team, in a similar format to the Ryder Cup.

Nadal and Roger Federer teamed up in the doubles at London 2022 in what was the Swiss’s last competitive duel before his retirement.

“I am happy to play the Laver Cup in Berlin with the European team,” Nadal said. “I have some very special memories from my Laver Cup experience, including all the emotions two years ago in London playing alongside Roger for the last time.”
