At CES 2023, the manufacturer Nanosys gave a behind-closed-doors demonstration of its “real” QLED technology to selected journalists. Why “real”? Well, current QLED TVs are nothing more than conventional LCD devices, in which the quantum dots act primarily as a kind of filter to improve color representation. However, the display technology from Nanosys does not use any LCD components. Instead, self-illuminating Quantum Dots are used, which is a little closer to OLEDs. However, as with Micro LED, this is an independent technology.

The colleagues from CNet have received some insights and are very enthusiastic. Accordingly, the image quality is comparable to QD-OLED or even better. The advantage of Nanosys QLEDs, which one would like to call NanoLEDs because of the risk of confusion, is that the panels work more efficiently and are ultimately cheaper to produce than OLEDs. But that’s still a long way off, because nanoLEDs could be ready for the mass market by 2025 at the earliest.

Incidentally, I don’t necessarily see NanoLED as the perfect name, because users keep confusing Micro LED and Mini LED. If then NanoLED is added, the confusion will be complete for many. But there are still problems to be solved anyway – the longevity of the blue QLED pixels in particular is apparently still a problem.

With NanoLED, very thin screens would be possible, as with OLED counterparts, since no separate backlight is required. However, longevity is not only an issue for Nanosys, but also for other manufacturers researching QLED technology – such as Samsung, Sharp, TCL and more. It is also conceivable that nanoLEDs are not the first to be used in TV sets. It is also possible that screens for smartphones or VR headsets are initially produced before moving on to larger diagonals.
