A resident of the neighborhood of Santos Suarezin the Diez de Octubre municipality of Havana, denounced that a group of neighbors detained an alleged thief who was detained with a backpack in which he carried all kinds of tools to steal, although they did not catch stolen items.

“This thief was caught trying to steal in the hallway of my house, we managed to capture him. This individual carried a backpack with flashlights and all kinds of implements to open or force from windows, doors or padlocks.” indicates a publication in the Revolico Habana Facebook group of the Internet user identified as Toni Hernández.

“We managed to catch him before he managed to take anything. We held him until the police came and took him away. This happened in Santo Suárez, Diez de Octubre. Be careful, my people, insure your homes and do not trust yourself, these people no longer believe in schedules and are prepared and with all kinds of tools,” he concluded.

Capture of Facebook/Toni Hernández

In the comments section of his publication, which was accompanied by a photo of the alleged thief, Toni Hernández was questioned by an Internet user – apparently close to the detained subject – who denounced that he had been hit with a machete.

“But they did not mention the machete blows they gave him, that they acted like animals, that that is what they are, but for defamation they also celebrate years”wrote the commentator, identified as “Laurencita La Chiqui”.

Although Hernández denied the use of physical violence against the alleged thief, the woman insisted that “yes, he was hit with plans”, and stressed that he was not caught with any stolen object, which is why the violence is not justified.

In response to the complaints of the person close to the subject, Toni Hernández insisted that he had nothing stolen because they caught him before he could take anything.

“His intention was to steal or were the tools he was carrying to fix my fan? (…) I would like to see how you react if they break into your house and try to bring you something, and also see how you manage to catch the thief, because I don’t think that if you say ‘thief, stay there until the police come’, listen to you a lot,'” he concluded, implying that the neighbors did use some kind of force to immobilize the subject.

Scenes like the one described have become more frequent in Cuba in recent months, amid a growing wave of robberies and citizen insecurity that keeps the population on edge.

Last Thursday a group of people managed to catch a thief who in full Tight habanero stole a cell phone from a woman and who in that case was caught with a backpack full of other people’s belongings on 23rd Street.

In May, residents of San Miguel del Padrón, also in Havana, beat up a thief who assaulted a 12-year-old boy to steal a phone.

Also last month, residents of the city of Guantánamo They captured and beat a man when he tried to steal a bicycle in broad daylight. In this case, images that circulated on social networks showed dozens of people on the street to witness the capture of the thief, who was later handed over to the police.

While in Cuba crimes and complaints from the population about the insufficient response of the police are increasing, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) assures that apprehends most criminals in just 48 hours and that it is the independent press that exaggerates the topic of crime and violence in the country.
