It’s been a while since the big Chinese groups continue to take an interest in the Western video game industry to swell their ranks and today, it is the Canadians of SkyBox Labs who join a Chinese juggernaut.

NetEase acquires SkyBox Labs at the start of 2023

The Canadian studio SkyBox Labs founded 13 years ago is therefore acquired by NetEase from the beginning of the year for an unknown sum. With the development of Lethal Tactics and Stela as the standard bearer of its skills, the studio has especially been talked about more recently for its support role with Xbox Game Studios and Electronic Arts among others.

Indeed, the SkyBox Labs teams are currently working on Halo Infinite, Minecraft or Fallout 76, not to mention their help with Age of Empires. Concretely, the studio will remain independent by passing under the leadership of NetEase and it will therefore continue to work for different studios and groups in the game industry. Shyang Kong, one of the founders of the studio, said this:

“By joining NetEase Games, we will be able to accelerate our plans to seize new creative opportunities, and benefit from access to world-class operational resources as well as all of NetEase’s services in order to accelerate our expansion in Canada. »

NetEase continues to grow after having welcomed the creator of Yakuza, Toshihiro Nagoshi, last year, but also after having bought No More Heroes, Grasshopper Manufacture or even the French of Quantic Dream.
