news culture Netflix: Fans of the Wednesday series may never see season 2 on the platform

A season 2 of Wednesday on Amazon Prime Video? Not impossible, if this new agreement involves an exclusive contract.

Is the potential sequel to Wednesday likely to change SVOD platform? This is in any case what the recent purchase of the studio of the series, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), by Amazon could suggest. which owns, it should be remembered, the SVOD platform Amazon Prime Video. Information reported by the very serious media Deadline which would mean, possibly, that Netflix could lose the rights to the series for a possible second season. Deadline nevertheless specifies that the agreement in no way guarantees the exclusivity of the program to Amazon Prime Video.

This would be a major loss for the platform. The last week of December, Wednesday began its 5th week in the top 10 France of Netflix and then accumulated more than a billion hours seen. A success barely shaken by the release of the new season of Emily in Paris. For good reason, the interpretation of the young actress Jenna Ortega is almost unanimous and brushes aside other aspects of the series that are much less attractive: a scenario deemed too conventional and a humor that does not reflect enough that of the cult saga. Wednesday is officially the second most watched English-language Netflix series of the year, just behind the last season of Stranger Things and ahead of sensation DAHMER.

What to expect from a season 2?

For the time being, season 2 of Tim Burton’s adaptation has not yet been formalized, but everything suggests that it is naturally only a matter of time. Producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar already seem to have a lot of ideas for the sequel:

We would like to explore and somehow complicate all relationships in the future. (…) For us, the series also speaks of this friendship between Mercredi and Enid, which is central. We would like to explore this aspect of Wednesday’s personality more (…) Then, the other thing that would be really interesting, would be to continue exploring the mother-daughter relationship between Wednesday and Morticia.

We’re not going to rule anything out, of course, the characters sometimes reveal themselves, that’s what we like in the series, it’s a very organic kind of journey. We have a road map, and we have roads on this map that take you in sometimes completely unexpected directions. We are therefore open to everything. (…)

The idea would therefore be above all to deepen the characters, and in particular that of Wednesday. The relationship maintained by Mercredi and Enid was also mentioned: “We want to explore that friendship in every way possible, but we’re not there yet and that’s where you sometimes get misguided by the fans (…). At the moment we are at the stage where we let’s be really open to seeing how these characters and this friendship evolves. As Al said, this friendship between Wednesday and Enid is at the heart of the vision we have for the show.
