With the wealth of the catalog of video on demand services, it is not uncommon to miss very nice films and series. The past few days have seen the arrival of the Black Mirror creator’s new miniseries and yet hardly anyone has watched this hilarious parody documentary.

Charlie Brooker, creator of Black Mirror, embarked on this amazing project some time ago. Entitled Planet Cunk, this mini-series features Philomena Cunk, a journalist played by Diane Morgan. His particuliarity ? It aims to retrace the history of humanity by traveling the planet, but the problem is that it is abysmal stupidity. If you think you know everything about the invention of the wheel, the Mona Lisa or nuclear energy, this very misinformed young lady (who has already appeared in other programs) will see you revise your judgment of the world and its history.

What is strong with Planète Cunk is its propensity to throw stupid punch-lines at us without forgetting to bring, from time to time, touches of poetry. If one adheres to this very particular style of the “mockumentary”, it is difficult not to see in it the most offbeat production of the moment.

Planet Cunk, the risky bet?

This British miniseries stars an inhabited Diane Morgan. The tongue-in-cheek humor is really spicy and there is really enough to have a good time. But for that, it is necessary to adhere to a very different proposal from the programs that we generally see on VOD platforms. The spectator evolves in sumptuous landscapes and discovers emblematic places of the planet. Diane Morgan, remarkably authentic, finds herself face to face with eminent professors and asks questions, each more silly than the other, not hesitating to refer to pop culture. In your opinion, is writing more important than rap metal?

Obviously, everything is scripted, but it’s very funny to see these specialists break down (they play the game well) as their interlocutor rants about her nonsense. It’s a bit as if we had taken out the actor from Idiocracy to plant him in this parody documentary. For example, she is able to discover a link between prehistoric paintings and Fast and Furious 7 to then explain to us that the author of these illustrations is surely dead by now. Planète Cunk, with its English humour, will touch lovers of neat writing. And the realization, with the different pieces presented, is remarkable and offers, beyond the burlesque aspect, a beautiful journey.
