Why do some series and content that appear in Netflix’s top 10 randomly end up being canceled, like 1899, or First Kill? The problem comes from the data collected, as specified by an executive of the company.

netflix recently experienced a wave of cancellations of all kinds of series and films like First Kill, Warrior Nun, The Midnight Club Where 1899, which were however all in the top 10. The question could therefore arise: but what happens, knowing that it is not necessarily a problem of rights? A manager of the SVOD service explains.

Netflix cancels its content with a vengeance because of the data collected

It’s a now famous quote from Netflix’s Ted Sarandos on how the company makes decisions about its content, including which series to authorize and which to cancel. “ It’s 70% instinct and 30% given. Most are hunches. Either the data reinforces your worst idea, or it just supports what you want to do anyway he had said.

The problem then comes from instinct » those responsible for the service offer, but also for a very specific metric: completion rate. This is the percentage of people who finish watching a series or a movie. The problem concerned in particular First Killa series that was canceled while Heartstopping, which had fewer viewing hours overall, was renewed for two more seasons. The reason : First Kill had a low completion rate (44%) and was canceled, which was not the case for Heartstopping (73%), which was renewed.

The numbers speak for themselves. resident Evil spent a lot of time in the top 1, but only had a 45% completion rate and was canceled. Squid Game had an exorbitant completion rate of 87% and was obviously renewed, as Arcane (60%). 1899 reportedly had a dismal 32% completion rate, according to third-party sources (Netflix doesn’t officially release them), hence its cancellation.

Seeing a Netflix series for a long time in the top 10 is therefore not necessarily good news if you hang on to it. After all, why would the service bother to renew a series that the audience can’t finish?
