New Modern Brera Museum opens in Milan after 52 years of delays

MILN.- He Museo The Brera Modern is to open at the end of the year, 52 years after it was first conceived, authorities announced.

The new museum, located just a few houses from the Pinacoteca di Brera, will house more than 100 works of until contemporary works that belong to the art gallery’s collection and that, for the most part, have been relegated to cellars.

Delays in opening the museum

The project has been plagued by numerous delays, the most recent of which are the discovery of asbestos and problems with the air conditioning system.

The new museum will officially open its doors on December 7, when the eyes of the European cultural elite are already on it. Mil for the annual gala for the opening of the opera season at La Scala.

The honour goes to the new director of the Brera Art Gallery, Angelo Crespi, who took up the post in February as part of the right-wing government’s move to place Italians at the helm of key cultural institutions. His predecessor, British-Canadian historian James Bradburne – who had pushed for the completion of the Museo Moderno – had served two four-year terms and was ineligible to continue in the post.

The Brera Art Gallery, founded in 1809, contains masterpieces by Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael and Hayez. The new museum, located in the nearby Palazzo Citterio, has already attracted 30,000 visitors over three weeks for a temporary exhibition. Concerts are planned to be held in the garden this summer.

The art gallery, together with the new Museo Moderno, is projected to welcome 500,000 visitors this year, up from 466,709 last year and continuing to rise from a pre-COVID-19 peak of about 410,000.
