The dramatic accident happened in Katernberg. The man is said to have tried to detonate several New Year’s rockets at the same time. However, they had already exploded on the ground and had caused severe burns. The eight-year-old daughter was also seriously injured.

The victims were treated on the spot by paramedics, emergency doctors and the chief emergency doctor and then taken to the hospital. The police has started investigation. The police are currently assuming that the fireworks were legal.

On New Year’s Day at lunchtime, a child was injured playing with fireworks on Goebenstrasse in the south-east district. “It was taken to the hospital,” said the fire service chief. He was not able to provide any information on the extent of the injuries in the afternoon.

Despite these accidents, the Kliniken Essen Mitte reported an “amazingly quiet New Year’s Eve”. “We had prepared for more emergencies,” says Dr. Andreas Grundmeier, Director of the Clinic for Emergency Medicine.

A comparison with the previous year shows how busy the Essen fire brigade was on New Year’s Eve and New Year: A year ago there were 189 calls, 202 fewer than this time. 181 cases last night involved fire operations and technical assistance. 210 times there were rescue service calls, in 34 cases the emergency doctor was called in.

Furniture caught fire on the balcony

Fireworks often caused fires. So on Saturday at 10:29 p.m. at the Violent Mountain in Überruhr-Hinsel. On the first floor, furniture on the balcony caught fire from a firework. A window pane burst from the intense heat. Smoke from the fire penetrated the apartment and the stairwell. All 14 residents left the building in good time and were treated by the rescue services. Nobody got hurt.

Another balcony fire had to be extinguished at 1.05 a.m. on Sälzerstrasse in Altendorf. The fire threatened to spread to the attic. A massive extinguishing attack was required to extinguish the fire.
