The short message service Twitter, which was taken over by Elon Musk, is struggling with further problems. Third-party clients currently have no way of connecting to the social network. It is unclear whether this was intentional or a mistake.

In addition to the website and the official Twitter apps, numerous developers have released their own clients that can be used to access the platform. Of course, the applications rely on an interface provided by Twitter to be able to interact with the service. Since yesterday, many users have been reporting that alternative Twitter clients such as Tweetbot, Twitterrific and Fenix no longer work. The apps currently do not allow most users to log into Twitter.

However, the interface was not completely closed. Lesser-known clients should still be able to access the API. According to The Verge Albatross and the iOS version of Fenix seem to be still running. Calls made from smaller accounts should also work. The API explorer offered by Twitter itself also has problems.

So far no statement from Twitter

Why the third-party software is suddenly locked out without notice remains open. It is conceivable that this is just a temporary bug. In this case, the apps should work again soon. Twitter has not yet made a statement on the subject. No information can be found on Elon Musk’s Twitter account either. The service may want to ban the third-party apps to maximize its own revenue from advertising and subscriptions.
