Nintendo has finally provided an official answer to one of the most frequently asked questions among fans of the Super Mario Bros. franchise: what is the exact relationship between Mario and Princess Peach?

That’s the good news, but the not so good news is that what has been revealed by the company may leave some of its most devoted fans anxious or disappointed for the release of the new animated film about the plumber.

And it seems that the bond between the two, despite everything they have experienced in all those games over almost four decades, would not really be as emotionally deep as many would have imagined.

Since, at least from the official position of its creator company, Mario and Princess Peach they’re not really a couple. But rather all this time and throughout all those adventures themselves they have remained just friends.

In other words, after thirty-eight years of adventures together Nintendo has officially sent Mario to the friend zone or friendzone of Princess Peach.

And it all happened in the simplest and most subtle way possible: through a YouTube video aimed at children.

How Nintendo confirmed Mario is in Princess Peach’s friendzone in the Super Mario Bros. universe.

Many of you may not know it, but Nintendo has a new, relatively official YouTube channel called play nintendo, where he usually shares release news. But it also tends to broadcast some audiovisual materials specially designed for younger audiences, children.

There, in these videos, the company is dedicated to explaining a bit of the mythology and history of its most important franchises, as well as its most representative characters. In the most recent of its premieres on said YouTube channel, it was the turn of explaining the general details about Princess Peach:

As we can see in the capsule, Mario is mentioned as one of His Highness’s “good friends”, but nothing more than that.

So because of this we can interpret that in reality that relationship seen between the two characters during the original trilogy of games for the NES has never evolved.

It should be noted that the Play Nintendo channel is promoted as the official medium for children and young people of the company.

So what is contained in the video can be considered as a formal position regarding the history of both characters.
