According to Nintendo, it is not currently planning to reduce the price of the Nintendo Switch.

At the same time, the console, which has now sold 122 million units, is breaking new ground.

The future of Nintendo Switch

Nothing should change in the prices of games at the moment. Recently, the sales of the Switch had declined somewhat.

Given that the Switch will be on the market for almost seven years, that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. For the current financial year, Nintendo expects a total of 18 million copies to be sold. In the previous year it was 23 million, the year before that it was 28.8 million.

According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa (via VGC) it is therefore difficult to keep the number of sales at a similar level. However, price reductions are not a solution that is currently being considered.

On the way in new territory

“We think we’re breaking new ground in our home console business,” he says. “In this environment, it will not be easy to sell hardware at the same pace as before.”

“We recognize that our new challenge is to convince consumers who are considering a new purchase, a replacement purchase or an additional purchase to reach for the Nintendo Switch.”

No successor in sight

A Switch successor has not yet been announced, and the existing user base should be supported with new and classic games alike.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct announced several remasters of previous games and an addition of Game Boy games to Nintendo Switch Online.

More on the subject:

“We also believe that the continuation of the Nintendo Switch life cycle will lead to opportunities for additional software that can be played by consumers,” he adds. “In December last year, for example, the number of Nintendo Switch customers hit a record high and many continue to play Nintendo Switch.”

“That’s why it’s important to demonstrate the desirability of the Nintendo Switch through future software offerings for customers considering purchasing new hardware, replacement hardware, or additional hardware.”

Most recently, the switch had overtaken the sales of PlayStation 4 and Game Boy, it is Nintendo’s most successful home console.

Only the Nintendo DS (154.02 million) and the PlayStation 2 (155 million) sold more copies.
