Several older Nintendo games, both on current and next-generation consoles, have received minor updates in recent weeks with which the developer aims to fix major security vulnerabilities.

Though Nintendo regularly offers updates for many of the developer’s most popular titles, older games tend to stop receiving updates a couple of years after release. Fans were stumped when Mario Kart 7 received a new update for the first time in 10 years without adding anything significant to the game.

Nintendo updates games from past consoles for security reasons

Now, Nintendo has revealed that the update was related to an important vulnerability. Although Nintendo itself ditched the 3DS and Wii U years ago, the consoles are still a popular choice for many budget gamers today.

Both consoles saw online play disappear from their devices earlier this year, with the eShop for both set to close in early 2023. Social media on devices was also shut down earlier this year, and fans were no longer able to Post your in-game screenshots to Facebook or Twitter from your consoles.

Now, however, several old games are getting new updates to fix a critical vulnerability that could put players in danger.

Nintendo’s updates are intended to address a recently discovered vulnerability dubbed “ENLBufferPwn”, rated as a level 9.8/10 vulnerability. The issue has been found to be present in multiple games and poses a serious risk to gamers who want to play their classic games as it could lead to payment information being stolen as well as camera and microphone access.

The vulnerability was found to be present in several 3DS, Wii U, and Switch games, affecting games as recent as Nintendo Switch Sports.
