Nokia Drone Networks, a division of the Swedish telecommunications company Nokia, has developed a CE-certified drone system that meets the safety requirements in the European Union. This was announced by Nokia Drone Networks on Tuesday. The all-in-one system is a “turnkey ‘drone-in-a-box’ solution” that can be used primarily by security authorities, in smart cities, in the construction industry and for surveillance tasks in the energy and defense sectors.

The system can be connected via public and private 4G/LTE and 5G networks. Manufacturing takes place in Europe. The set consists of Nokia drones, a docking station, a dual gimbal camera and supports Nokai MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) edge cloud processing. The latter should guarantee high reliability when connecting to public and private mobile networks as well as high data rates with low latency.

Data can thus be collected and processed in real time in the Edge Cloud. In addition, Nokia provides an open API framework that governments and businesses can use to integrate for various use cases, applications and systems from Nokia and third parties. This includes, for example, automation in the areas of identifying objects as well as the tracking and measurement of networks in order to inspect transmission lines, for example.

The drone can be piloted remotely for search and rescue operations and infrastructure damage assessment. Flying in BVLOS mode (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) is possible. A dual modem ensures that the drones can connect to multiple networks at the same time. It thus meets the requirements of the aviation authorities for system redundancy and thus meets the requirements of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in Europe and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA for remote operation.

The drone can also be programmed for autonomous flights in order to monitor major events and carry out remote inspections of infrastructure, for example. Depending on the configuration, the drone achieves a flight time of more than 50 minutes with a range of 30 km.

It comes with a docking station that protects it and any payload during transport. It also serves the drone in the field as a landing platform and for charging.
