NRW Minister rejects digitization as a school subject

Bielefeld. Despite the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI), the North Rhine-Westphalian school minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) rejects a central media subject. “Media competence is more than a school subject,” said Feller of the Neue Westfälische (Wednesday edition) published in Bielefeld. “Tuesday, third hour: Digitization? I think that’s the wrong approach,” said the CDU politician. “Digitization and the social change that goes with it are far too complex to be reduced to just one subject.”

Feller sees a need for several subjects to convey a critical attitude towards AI-generated images, texts or videos. The classification of ChatGPT and other machines capable of learning is “an interdisciplinary task – just like learning to read and write”.

The minister is concerned with dealing with AI in a critical and constructive and at the same time innovative and individual way. “When photos are circulating on social media showing the violent arrest of a former US President, young people need to be able to critically question the authenticity of that photo,” she said. “To do this, the possibilities of artificial intelligence must be addressed constructively in the classroom.”

Some schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, such as the Evangelisch Stiftisches Gymnasium in Gütersloh, have been exploring what artificial intelligence can do for months. “AI opens up new opportunities for teachers to design their lessons innovatively and to tailor them individually to their students,” said Feller. This is now being tested in schools across the country.
