The National Institute of Health reported on the new variant of Covid19 that is circulating in Colombia.
This is Omicron EG.5 which, according to the entity, not related to increased transmissibility or disease. As reported by the National Institute of Health, the variant was evidenced since June 4 in the country.
The World Health Organization also provided information on this new variant that it considers to be a variant of interest. with a worldwide prevalence of 17.4% and that it has grown compared to the data reported four weeks ago when the prevalence was 7.6%.
The Omicron EG.5 variant was reported by the World Health Organization on February 17, 2023 when it was considered a variant under monitoring since July 19.

What is known about this new variant?
However, according to the WHO, the health risk of this new variant is low and its effects comparable to those of previous variants.
“Although the EG.5 variant has shown an increase in its prevalence, growth advantage and immune escape properties, to date there have been no reports of changes in the severity of the disease”, indicated the organization.
The authorities recommend that citizens review their security scheme and maintain self-care measures.
