While Spotify shook the web with its annual retrospective just a few weeks ago, it’s time to take stock of the artists who shone in 2022 on music streaming platforms. The least we can say is that in France, rap is the big winner of this musical year. At the top of the charts, Jul, Ninho and colleagues dominate Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music.

2022, year of rap in France?

If we take a look at the most listened to artists in France on Spotify, it is clear that the French love rap and hip-hop. And more particularly, local rap. In the top 10 musical artists, The Weeknd is the only international one. We find Jul, Ninho and Gazo on the podium. PNL, Damso, Naps, Orelsan or even Nekfeu follow them closely. If there is an analysis to be made, it is simple: France loves rap. On the side of Deezer and Apple Music, the verdict is final. The success of rap is still going strong.

If the ranking of the most listened to artists in 2022 is very focused on rap, it is also very masculine. Indeed, Angèle squats 32nd place thanks to her album Ninety-Five and stands out as the first feminist artist of this top. Of the 50 artists highlighted, the singers can unfortunately be counted on the fingers of one hand.

To find pop in the ranking of the most listened to songs on Spotify, you have to wait for sixth place with As It Was by Harry Styles. However, the trend is a little different globally.

Internationally, the ranking of the most listened to artists is a little more balanced at Spotify. Indeed, unlike at home, only two hip-hop stars are present: Drake and The Weeknd. At the very top of the top, the Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny is well established. As was already the case last year, and the one before. With his new album, Midnights, Taylor Swift has broken the platform and takes second place in the top of the most streamed artists on Spotify. Finally, with their fifth place, BTS proves that K-Pop is well and truly established in our musical landscape.

As 2023 is upon us, it is worth remembering that a rise in the prices of music streaming platforms hangs in the noses of users, Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and others being in the crosshairs of the National Music Center.
