A 95-year-old passenger was killed when a small plane crash-landed on a popular California beach. The accident happened before the eyes of helpless beach goers just a few meters from the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. Video recordings showed how the pilot apparently tried to make an emergency landing on the beach the day before, but the Cessna 150 overturned.

Aboard the plane were the pilot and former Santa Monica Mayor Rex Minter. The 95-year-old died, the rescue workers said. They did not provide any information on the pilot’s health. Santa Monica’s expansive beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Its wooden pier is the end of the legendary Route 66, which starts in Chicago and runs across the United States.
