The first screening of the One Piece series by Netflix secretly took place lately. The feedback is very bad. Another disaster in sight?
Netflix is expected at the turn for its One Piece series. Since its announcement, the live-action series has particularly divided the community. Some fans want to believe it and give a chance to the streaming giant to whom we owe the horrible film Death Note. Another fringe is more pessimistic and already sees the shipwreck coming. The first returns would have fallen and it would be a disaster.
Shipwreck in sight for the One Piece series?
Wouldn’t Netflix have learned the lesson? After Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist et Death Note, the SVoD giant is going to do it again with One Piece. Translating the universe of Eiichiro Oda’s work, his characteristic humor or his oh so epic battles into real shots is a major challenge. The bet would obviously be very far from being held. According to leaker Divine Seeker, a first private test screening was recently carried out and the feedback is scathing. The privileged few who were able to discover the first episodes of the Netflix series in advance One Piece are visibly unanimous: it’s bad. Starting with the special effects simply described as “terrible”, but it doesn’t stop there.
The returns would have shown that the story of the first episodes of the adaptation was too messy for the uninitiated. The scenario would then make no sense for those who do not know the original universe and Netflix would currently be rewriting complete episodes to correct the situation. The problem is that even for fans of the manga, the series One Piece would be confused. In question, doubtful script changes. We learn for example that the first half of the first episode would be impossible to understand because of badly brought flashbacks.

Luffy’s childhood would then be swept away to jump straight to the introduction of Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji in the span of just 15 minutes. A change to say the least astonishing with the source material which takes the time to introduce each character for several chapters, starting with Shanks Le Roux, mentor of the elastic man. The tone of the One Piece series would also be questioned and would not work in any way. On the one hand because of the make-up and the design of certain characters which seem really strange. On the other hand, the adaptation would not manage to move from humor to more serious scenes as the original work skilfully does. ” It’s shocking and incoherent “, if we are to believe these first returns.
Can Netflix fix it by then? That remains to be seen, especially since the One Piece series would air on September 23, 2023, according to cinematographer Michael Wood BSC. The interpreter of Zoro had also confirmed that the adaptation would arrive on the small screen this fall. It is therefore very likely that he will be called back to film entire scenes again to take into account the first feedback.
