Amazon apparently wants to provide the starting point of its business, online shopping, with an AI search. Corresponding job advertisements were viewed by several US media. Especially when looking for a senior software developer, the Seattle-based US company leaves no doubt about its intentions.

There is talk of redesigning the “Amazon search with an interactive conversational experience”. Users should get answers to their questions, be able to compare products and receive personalized suggestions. According to the job advertisement, Amazon itself rates the change as drastic. “Next-generation deep learning techniques” are to be used for the AI search. The company did not want to comment further on this when asked by US media.

The fact that Amazon is picking up on the AI chatbot trend should come as a surprise to few. When it comes to motivating customers to shop by using new technology, the company has already shown itself to be imaginative in the past. Language assistant Alexa serves this purpose, among other things. Amazon didn’t always have a lucky hand. The stick-on order buttons called Dash were switched off again in 2019.

For AI chatbots, Amazon would follow the lead of ChatGPT and Google Bard. However, it is questionable whether one of the biggest criticisms of the Amazon search – the placement of sponsored products – would be eliminated with AI support. In general, AI is also a big topic for Amazon: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy only announced his own language model at the beginning of May. He also expects growth thanks to AI applications running in the cloud.
