Inflation is pushing more and more consumers to downsize of their purchases and this now seems to concern almost all sectors of activity. Even Macs, known for historically resisting the fall in computer sales, have ended up giving in facing the crisis. On the side of mobile network operators, however, the figures are certainly not looking good, but growth is still in order. In any case, this is what emerges from the latest ARCEP study on the subject. Under this acronym hides the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution, an independent body. Its role is to regulate telecoms in France.

Among the figures in the document, we can see that the turnover of the operators “in the retail market” has climbed 1.9% if we compare the third quarter of 2022 to the same period the previous year. Admittedly, it’s not fantastic, but the results remain honorable, especially when you know that the prices of the packages will soon increase. Except, it seems, at Free, which has promised not to follow the movement at least until… 2027!

Users are more and more won over by 5G

Alongside these encouraging numbers, the ARCEP report also allows us to discover that the number of 5G subscribers has quadrupled in just one year. That is now 6.2 million paying customers in the third quarter of 2022, which is still a minority (6% of the cake only) compared to Internet users who prefer 4G. The latter are in fact counted at the level of 69.7 milliona statistic up 8%.

With this, we notice that sending traditional messages (SMS and MMS) continues to decline, a constant since 2016. Compared to the third quarter of 2021, the fall here is 9%. And for good reason: users today prefer VoIP apps like Signal or Telegram for the most secure of them, even if the iMessage or WhatsApp format remain more popular.

Getting equipped with fiber remains essential

For the other significant results, we also note that subscriptions for fiber optic boxes are in good shape, even if the growth is weaker than before. 17.1 million dedicated devices are now in circulation, compared to 13.4 million a year earlier. Staying connected therefore turns out to be an almost elementary need. for French households, despite the sometimes off-putting prices. And with the next scores taking Black Friday and the holiday season into account, the trend is likely to continue.
