MediaTek and Qualcomm currently dominate the smartphone chip market. Of course, there are also Apple and Samsung, for example, who do their own thing, as well as smaller providers such as Rockchip and Unisoc. But only a few smartphone manufacturers invest in chip development themselves. According to new leaks, Oppo is said to be joining. From 2024, the company could already rely on self-developed chips.

That would be obvious: With the MariSilicon X, the manufacturer already has an image processing chip (ISP) at the start, while the MariSilicon Y is responsible for Bluetooth. In addition, Oppo belongs to the BBK group together with realme, vivo and OnePlus. Should Oppo pull its own chips out of a hat, the developments could certainly also be used by the sibling brands in the long term. So that would make the development a notch more worthwhile.

Allegedly, Oppo has already assigned thousands of employees to the development. However, details are still missing. It should be considered a given that ARM designs are combined with MariSilicon. It will be interesting to see whether Oppo will redesign its own chips from scratch or choose a partner who will lend a hand. The latter was the way of Google, whose Tensor SoCs are adapted Samsung Exynos. But I suspect that Oppo is more likely to go the first way and create its own designs.

Similar rumors circulated a year ago, according to which Oppo allegedly wanted to develop custom SoCs and have them manufactured by TSMC. At that time, however, the talk was of availability in 2023. Now the talk is of 2024. In the end you can only wait and see. Either way, this information should be treated with caution for the time being. Because Oppo itself is of course silent. At the moment, they certainly want to clarify the dispute with Nokia anyway. Disputes over patents are currently preventing OnePlus and Oppo from selling their smartphones in Germany.
