Tegucigalpa, May 8. The President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, greeted his Russian counterpart and ally, Vladimir Putin, on Monday for the 78th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, which, he said, “today they intend to revive the enemies of freedoms and the common good”.
“On the 78th anniversary of the great victory of the Soviet Union and the peoples against Hitlerian fascism that today seek to revive the enemies of freedom and the common good, we salute you on behalf of the heroic people of Darío, Zeledón, Zelaya, Sandino, Carlos, the FSLN, and so many Nicaraguan patriots and heroes,” Ortega wrote to Putin, in a letter released by the Nicaraguan Executive.
In the message, entitled “Eternal victory and non-repetition,” the Nicaraguan president stated that he celebrates “this anniversary in full and lucid struggle against the adversaries of life and of the human family, and we join the bright and luminous memory of all the fallen and redeemed, in the Great Patriotic War, thinking like Martí, that homeland is humanity”.
“These are crucial moments of hope and firm determination, of conviction and undefeated strengths, those of us who live in today’s world, with the sacred flames and the strength of common sense that demands from all of us peace, respect, rights, goodwill, plenitude “, he added.
In the letter, which Ortega signed together with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, the dignitaries congratulated Putin, the “Soviet and Russian families” and the “families of the fraternal and supportive world, for all the victories, and for which They will surely come.”
The Government of Nicaragua commemorated the 78th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in Plaza 22 de Agosto, in Managua, which was attended by representatives of the Executive and the Russian Embassy.
Russia is an old ally of Nicaragua that during the first Sandinista government (1979-1990) provided Soviet weapons to the Nicaraguan Armed Forces.
Nicaragua is one of the few countries, along with Venezuela and the small island states of Nauru and Tuvalu, that joined Russia in recognizing the independence of the Georgian separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and that has received high-ranking Russian officials since the Eurasian giant invaded Ukraine.
