More than 200 millionaires, including two French, ask Wednesday January 18, in a letter addressed to world leaders relayed by Oxfam France and on the occasion of the Davos economic forum, to be taxed more “for our common good”.

Inheritance inequalities

Among the signatories of this letter are two French people, a man, Jonathan Hallama and a woman, named Eugénie E., whose family name is not specified in full. The letter was also signed by American actor Mark Ruffalo and American producer Abigail Disney, Walt Disney’s great-niece.

“A simple and common sense economy”

This letter, signed by millionaires from 13 different countries, pleads for the establishment of a tax on the wealthiest. In fact, inequalities have soared over the past ten years, worried the NGO Oxfam in a report published at the opening of the Swiss annual meeting on Monday.

Of $100 of wealth created, $54.40 went into the pockets of the top 1%, while 70 cents went to the bottom 50%, she found, also advocating for increased taxation billionaires in order to halve the number by 2030.

Boris Vallaud: “If we do not question inequalities, we will have missed this crisis”

“You, our representatives around the world, must tax us, the ultra-rich, and you must start now”write the millionaires in their letter. “Tax the ultra-rich and do it now. It’s simple, common-sense economics.”they continue, referring to “an investment for our common good and a better future”. “As millionaires, we want to make this investment.”

“In France, more than 120,000 people have wealth in excess of five million dollars. At the very top of the ladder, Bernard Arnault is now the richest man in the world.comments Oxfam France in a press release, adding that “Taxing the wealth of French billionaires at barely 2% would finance the expected pension deficit”.
