Big blow for the Overwatch community. Blizzard has just announced that the biggest promise that served to justify the transition to the second episode will not be kept.

More than six months after its release, Overwatch 2 is on the right track. The crash launch was now behind him and a bright future was ahead. Players were therefore impatiently awaiting the big new feature missing when free-to-play was released: the story mode. Blizzard had announced that it needed a little more time and its arrival was scheduled for later this year. Except that here, the plans have changed and the American publisher will not fully keep its promise to the chagrin of the community.

No story mode in Overwatch 2 finally

The transition to Overwatch 2 held the promise of a scripted PvE mode. A story mode in short, which would expand the universe and the characters of the license. Because this project was ambitious and the novelty was such that it would have made it possible to create a break with its predecessor, Blizzard wanted to create a second game rather than rework the initiatory episode. The pill is therefore all the more difficult to pass. This Tuesday, May 16, 2023, the game’s teams took stock of the coming seasons and the ax fell. The PvE mode as promised will never see the light of day.

« The development of the PvE experience has not progressed at all as we would have hoped (…) For the game to have the level you deserve, it is clear that we cannot realize this original vision presented in 2019 », explains Jared Neuss, producer ofOverwatch 2. No one-shot story campaign, no character progression with unlockable talents. It will instead be more narrative PvE missions that will arrive at the same time as Season 6. More concretely, they will take the form of special events where PvE missions will be added over time.

They will serve well to extend the story ever further with scenarios that are officially part of the lore of Overwatch, and others who will not necessarily be. A decision that a large part of the gaming community has trouble swallowing. “ Overwatch 1 died for this? “, can we read repeatedly on social networks. “Wasn’t that the whole point of OW 2? I don’t know what to say, I’m just sad,” adds another. The feeling of disappointment seems to be shared, but a plethora of content is coming in the coming months.

The content of the next seasons of Overwatch 2 revealed

Blizzard wants reassuringly, PvE will be included, but in a different way. ” We have a ton of awesome PvE content coming this year. Big story missions, new cinematics, co-op vents and single player missions to master the heroes. It’s all on the way “Explains the executive producer on his Twitter account. And precisely, the American publisher has unveiled a large part of the roadmap for the next few months and the next seasons.
