Pakistan: Two weeks of monsoon rains leave at least 55 dead, including 8 children

The city of Lahore, in the east of the country, was the scene of unprecedented rainfall the previous day, which flooded several streets and disrupted daily life. Since Wednesday, 19 people have died in the city due to falling roofs or being electrocuted, authorities said. Pakistan’s weather agency warned that the city could receive more rain.

At least eight children died due to a huge avalanche in Shangla, a district of Khaiber Pashtunjua province bordering Afghanistan, authorities said. Rescuers were trying to remove a huge amount of mud for fear that other missing children may have been buried.

Heavy rains also continued to batter the country, overflowing the Jhelum and Chenab rivers in Punjab province, forcing the disaster management agency to issue an alert for fears of flash flooding.

The rains returned to Pakistan a year after the 2022 rains burst their banks and at some point flooded a third of the country, claiming 1,739 lives. Flooding last year also left $30 billion in damage in Pakistan.
