Pentagon tests hackers to launch cyberattacks against US satellite

The Pentagon hosted a contest calling on hackers to compete to see who is the first to access a US government satellite.

The contest was organized by Air Force and Space Force officials in Las Vegas to hack a working satellite orbiting the world, and a prize of $50,000 will be awarded.

The competition was dubbed “Hack-a-Sat,” which will provide national defense agencies with information on cybersecurity weaknesses and advanced infiltration tactics, involving five teamsreported Fox News.

“We don’t want to be just one big monolithic organization,” Space Force Captain Kevin Bernert said, according to Politico. “We want as many people as possible to get involved in an intelligent way. And so the long-term impact on that is understanding that you have to bake cybersecurity, not just after.”

This has been just the latest of the Defense Department’s attempts to bring outside cybersecurity experts into development on military systems.. The Pentagon has extended similar opportunities for collaboration to experts from other technological fields.

Silicon Valley has begun winning similar contracts as the Pentagon turns to private companies to boost the development and adoption of artificial intelligence, according to reports.

“This kind of change doesn’t always move as quickly or smoothly as I’d like.”Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a December speech to a group that included emerging technology companies.

The competition between tech startups and the Department of Defense started before the public commitment to long language models like ChatGPG. Saildrone, a company founded in 2013, started to develop a series of AI systems for international water surveillance in 2021.
