Pier 42 revitalization project inaugurated

Residents of the Lower East Side now have a new park that’s open to the public just in time for this holiday weekend.

The space, on Pier 42, stretches from Montgomery Street to East River Park and includes a new playground and picnic area.

The councillor for the area, Carlina Rivera, posted a message on social media about the new park.

“The revitalization of Pier 42 has been a long-standing priority for many. Upland Park will be a green and recreational space that will improve well-being and quality of life. “Another example of how we are delivering for the eastern area, having achieved this commitment in the ESCR negotiations,” the councillor wrote.

The park also has a dedicated bicycle lane.

It also has access to the riverside area, exercise equipment for adults, and a recreational terrace with soccer and tennis courts.

According to the Parks Department, the project is designed to be resistant to flooding and any other problems related to climate change.

The $33 million opening is part of NYC Parks and the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s “Vital Parks” initiative, which aims to increase access to outdoor recreational spaces for all New Yorkers.

“Today we joined @NYCParks to cut the ribbon on the final phase of Pier 42. This long-awaited revitalization project includes a new eight-acre park and restrooms, with a total investment of $33.6 million,” the New York City Economic Development Corporation said in a message on social media.
