If you own a Google Pixel smartphone, you obviously have to live with the fact that the battery life is massively reduced due to a bug, while the device can get very warm. Apparently the Google app is responsible for the problems.

How Engadget reports, numerous users of smartphones from the Google Pixel series report Reddit and in the Google Support Forumsthat their devices are currently overheating and draining their batteries quickly. The cause seems to be the Google app after the delivery of a new update began on May 12, 2023.

According to user reports, the problem cannot be solved with a rollback either. Even changing to an older version of the Google app does not help. The users also tested versions that were published before May 1st.

Google smartphones again and again with software-related problems

What exactly the problem is is not yet known. It is suspected that a bug in the app is causing constant attempts to establish a connection to Google servers. It is also unclear which other devices apart from the Google Pixel 6 Pro are currently showing such symptoms. So far, there have been reports about the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7, among other things. The strong heating of the smartphone suggests that the app is constantly fully utilizing the CPU. Some users fear that the long-term load and heat development will affect the lifespan of the battery and the SoC. Google has not yet commented on the subject.

It’s not the first time a software glitch has caused headaches for Pixel smartphone owners. Last May, Google had to stop an update for the devices because the vibration motor only provided significantly less haptic feedback. In December 2021, an update also had to be suspended because a problem caused phone calls to be suddenly dropped.

Summary

  • Pixel smartphones have battery & heat problem, trigger Google App
  • Rollback & older versions don’t help, cause unknown
  • Assumption: App constantly establishes a connection to Google servers
  • Are Pixel 6 Pro, 6a & 7 affected, impact on battery & CPU?
  • Not the first problem with Pixel smartphones
