This time, that’s it, after several difficult years to manage because of shortages, the PlayStation 5 is crushing the competition. In any case, this is what emerges from the figures proposed by GSD for the month of March and the first quarter of 2023.
For their analysis, the experts consulted sales data from European countries including France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Portugal. And Sony’s console dominance is spectacular.
Thus, sales of PS5 were multiplied by 5 during this month compared to the same period in 2022. Opposite, the competition looks gray, since sales of Nintendo Switch drop by 19% while those of Xbox Series S and X decrease by 13%.
For the first quarter, it’s even more impressive. 1.5 million consoles were sold in the countries concerned (+41%). The PS5 sees its sales explode with a dizzying increase of 369%! Conversely, the Switch is down 18%, while the Xbox Series S and X are down 10%.
Finally, this trend is also observable on the accessories side, where the 13% increase in sales is largely explained by the success of the PS5 DualSense controller, which is a real hit.
A surprising French market
These figures are all the more surprising if we put them into perspective with the results that we observed in France last year. GfK experts have indeed found that 987,000 consoles were sold in France in 2022. Nintendo represented 58% of the market share, while PlayStation only obtained 26% and Xbox 16%.
In this context, the French public had acclaimed the Switch, a very efficient family console and Nintendo’s ultra popular licenses such as Mario and Zelda. But since the situation is improving on the side of shortages, it’s a safe bet that Sony and its PS5 will now obtain leadership in this market.
Anyway, Nintendo has not said its last word and has operated a real diversification of its activities. This goes through the cinema with the box of the latest Mario film, but also with the opening of amusement parks in the United States and Japan.
