A Mississippi police officer who shot and wounded an 11-year-old boy after the boy called 911 for help was suspended without pay Monday, authorities said.
The Indianola Board of Aldermen voted 4-1 to suspend Sergeant Greg Capers without pay “effective immediately” after the officer shot a minor who called authorities to report an incident of violence in the chest. domestic at his mother’s house.
11-year-old Aderrien Murry was seriously injured when Capers shot him in the chest. The boy called Mississippi police to help his family and was later shot by an officer who said the bullet that pierced his lung felt “like a hard blow to the chest.”
The incident occurred on May 20 in Indianola, a town of about 9,300 in rural Mississippi, when Murry called for help after his mother’s partner, with whom he has another child, showed up unexpectedly at the house.
“I really thought I was going to die,” Aderrien Murry told “Good Morning America” in an interview that aired Tuesday.
Aderrien’s mother, Nakala Murry, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Indianola, the town’s police chief and the officer accused of shooting her son. The complaint, which seeks at least $5 million, alleges that Indianola failed to properly train the officer and that he used excessive force.
Nakala Murry asked her son to call the police at 4 a.m. when the father of one of her other children showed up at her home, Carlos Moore, a lawyer for the Murry family, told The Associated Press last week. pass. Moore said the man was furious and Nakala Murry felt threatened.
Moore said two police officers came to the residence, and one of them kicked and broke down the front door before Nakala Murry opened it. The woman told them that the man who had caused the incident was gone, but that there were three children inside the house, according to Moore.

The lawyer added that Nakala Murry told him that Sgt. Greg Capers, who is black, started yelling and said that anyone inside the house should come out with their hands up. Moore said Aderrien, who is also black, walked into the room with nothing in his hands, and was shot in the chest by Capers.
“I came out doing this,” Aderrien commented to “Good Morning America” with her hands raised. He said that blood came out of his mouth after being shot.
Aderrien Murry was hospitalized for five days with a collapsed lung, lacerated liver and broken ribs, according to Moore.
“God was the one who saved my life,” Aderrien told the show. “And I really believe that.”
