According to authorities, a man who attacked three police officers with a machete on New Year’s Eve near New York’s Times Square is being investigated on suspicion of Islamic extremism.
The 19-year-old probably traveled to New York from the US state of Maine for such an act, an unnamed investigator told the New York Times on Monday. The man is being investigated for two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted assault.
During the attack on New Year’s Eve, one of the three police officers shot the alleged perpetrator in the shoulder. One of them and the 19-year-old are still in the hospital but in stable condition, the newspaper further reported.
The suspect converted to Islam a few months ago and accused his mother of a lack of faith in a possible farewell letter. (dpa)
