The opposition in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt criticizes state parliament president Gunnar Schellenberger (CDU). According to a report in the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Saturday edition), the politician bypassed the state government in negotiations with Uzbekistan to recruit 5,000 workers. Stefan Gebhardt, Parliamentary Secretary of the Left Group, said he was “speechless”. Schellenberger has no corresponding powers either as a member of parliament or as president. “If the entire process happened without the knowledge of the state government, it would be a real scandal,” said Gebhardt.

Sebastian Striegel from the Greens said that Schellenberger’s appearance caused his group to shake their heads and bewildered. “We expect the President of the Landtag to respect the constitutional allocation of powers and to be as transparent as possible about his trips, their purpose and content.”

The state chancellery confirmed that they had been approached with “considerations” about recruiting workers. “Any implementation options” would now be examined, said Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ute Albersmann of the MZ. “For this purpose, the responsible authorities at state and federal level are involved in the required manner.”
