Pope condemns assassination of presidential candidate in Ecuador

The death of a personality who dedicated his life to fighting crime and corruption has drawn the world’s attention to Ecuador, its wave of violent deaths and the country’s vulnerability to crime.

The Argentine Jesuit pope, who visited Ecuador in 2015, on one of the first trips of his pontificate, said he was praying for the Villavicencio family and for all the Ecuadorian people.

“Likewise, in the face of the suffering caused by unjustifiable violence, which he condemns with all his might, His Holiness urges citizens and political forces to unite in a common effort for peace,” says the telegram, signed by the Secretary of State of the Holy See.

Ecuador has detained six Colombian men in connection with the murder.
