The only remaining badges on the social network are those of Twitter Blue followers, as promised by Elon Musk. They do not involve any identity verification.

Elon Musk had promised it several times, it is now a reality. Twitter began this Thursday, May 20 to remove the “old” certification badges, those obtained before the creation of the Twitter Blue subscription.

From now on, the only blue badges visible on the networks are those of accounts that have paid for a Twitter Blue subscription. However, they are not accompanied by any identity verification process, unlike the historical certification badges, granted – among others – to politicians, stars, activists or journalists in order to fight against misinformation and identity theft.

Many accounts are affected by this deletion, including among the most followed. Stars ranging from Kim Kardashian to Justin Bieber have seen their blue ticks disappear, as have political figures ranging from Donald Trump to Pope Francis.

No more identity verification

The date of April 20 had been communicated by Twitter for the disappearance of these badges, after Elon Musk first mentioned the date of April 1. For a few days, confusion had nevertheless settled on the platform, which no longer made it possible to differentiate between the badges associated with the simple payment of ten euros per month and the blue checkmarks linked to authentication of the ‘user.

With the old process, Twitter decided whether or not to grant – free of charge – a certification badge to a user at risk of identity theft by requiring the transmission of an identity document.
