Singer Preta Gil shared a selfie on her social networks on Wednesday (2/8) and claimed to be experiencing a “post-chemo hangover”. The singer was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January this year.

Chemotherapy – the treatment that Preta is undergoing – uses several potent drugs that, when mixed with the blood, are taken throughout the body with the objective of destroying the cancer cells.

The “post-chemo hangover” is how patients refer to the side effects of these medications. According to the Inca (National Cancer Institute), the main symptoms associated with the treatment are:

  • Diarrhea;
  • Loss of hair;
  • Mouth sores;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Sensitive skin;
  • loss of appetite;
  • Infertility in some cases

Along with chemotherapy, patients are also instructed to take other medications as supportive therapy. The intention is to control the emergence of infections and alleviate the symptoms produced by drugs against cancer.
