Prime Minister Rhein (CDU): The federal government must limit immigration

Hessian head of state calls for permanent financial commitments from the federal government for refugees – “We democrats have to show that we have the situation under control”

Osnabruck. The Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) has called for refugees to be limited to those who are entitled to asylum. Rhein told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ): “What we need are permanent financial commitments from the federal government, via a breathing system. That means: The more refugees come, the more money the federal government has to pay. The federal states can Only the federal government can’t limit immigration. And if it could finally do that effectively, a breathing system would be the best solution for it too, because it would have to pay less in the future if the number of refugees fell.”

He is “greatly concerned” that the mood of the population could change. “The mood hasn’t turned against refugees yet. But it’s a fragile situation. We must therefore do everything we can to ensure that the citizens see that we Democrats have the situation under control. The longer talks last and the less money available stands, the more difficult it becomes,” said Rhein. He defended the current asylum law. “In a country like ours, with its past, there will always be humanitarian immigration law. And as a Christian Democrat, I think that’s absolutely right.” However, it would increase acceptance if only those “who are really persecuted and who are entitled to our protection” were allowed to stay.
