The Federal Consumer Attorney (Profeco) made a quality study in which he analyzed the sodium content in two cracker brands and revealed which of them is worse for your health.

According to the dependency results, the Saladitas salty cookies turned out worst evaluatedas they contain 466 milligrams (mg) of sodium per 30 grams (g) of product and up to 1,554 mg per 100 g, which is the most commonly consumed portion.

While in regards to the ritz crackers they have 243 mg for each; and 811 mg per 100 g of product, which represents 40.55 of the intake recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Although the Ritz were better evaluated, both brands of crackers have the warning label “Excess sodium”, as they exceed the allowable amount of 350 mg of sodium per 100 ml or 100 g.

Profeco explained that sodium is a component found in most foods and is vital for the functioning of the human body, as it helps blood pressure and extracellular fluids as well as nerve function and the muscles.

However, if sodium is consumed in excess, it can cause arterial and kidney damage, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, strokes, myocardial infarction and diabetes; conditions known as “non-communicable diseases” and which are the leading cause of deaths from disease.
