Prophet? James Cameron warned us a long time ago about artificial intelligence (and nobody listened to him)

What you need to know:

The use of artificial intelligence is a serious issue in Hollywood. So much so that important filmmakers like James Cameron warned us about it a long time ago.

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence has exploded today to divide the world. Some consider that it is a very useful tool, others believe that it is a technology that should not exist, but the truth is that it is among us and there is no turning back. However, There are those who think that AI is a real danger and among them is none other than James Cameron.

Within the world of cinema, several respected directors such as Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro have spoken about the role of artificial intelligence not only in the seventh art, but also in the world in general. But even if you don’t believe it, James Cameron is really concerned about the use of AI for military purposes, almost like what he showed us in the saga of Terminator.

James Cameron warned us many years ago about artificial intelligence

It turns out that a few days ago, James Cameron spoke with CTV News and interview with this medium, he spoke about his point of view of artificial intelligence. And boy does he consider it a serious issue, because he thinks that if AI is used for military or weapons purposes, it would represent a real risk to humanity.

“I warned them in 1984 and they didn’t listen (referring to ‘Terminator’). I think the militarization of AI is the biggest danger. I think we will enter the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it ourselves, then surely someone else will build it, and then things will go further.

As you will remember, Terminatorreleased precisely in 1984, is the first film in the science fiction franchise about a killer cyborg –played by Arnold Schwarzenegger– and an artificially created defense network that becomes intelligent…so as you can see, James Cameron’s idea wasn’t that far from reality.

On the other hand, James Cameron stated that although he does not believe that artificial intelligence will replace film and television writers in the near future. The reason? Well, he believes that currently, this technology does not know how to do anything other than release information and cannot transmit emotions.

Personally, I don’t think that a disembodied mind that just spits out what other embodied minds have said, about the life they’ve had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality, and just throwing it all together in a salad of words and then spit it out… I don’t think I have something that is going to move the audience. Let’s wait 20 years, and if an AI wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we have to take it seriously.”

What do you think? Do you agree with what James Cameron said about artificial intelligence? It’s really amazing that somehow this filmmaker went ahead and showed us that it was possible for AI to be in our midst. Although it may be too early to think that he will dominate the world, don’t you think?
